Llamas go to school with GFWC-Hastings Women's Club volunteers 6/22/01 Elaine Gilbert Assistant Editor "Is your Mamma a Llama?" That was the name of the book volunteer Audrey Renner from the GFWC-Hastings Women's Club read and donated to Head Start students before three llamas paid a visit to the children. Excitement was in the air as a two week old llama, its mother and another llama visited teacher April Tobias' class at the Sue Drummond Head Start Building to spend some time with the children. Agnes Adrounie, who heads the club's program to provide volunteers to read to the Head Start students, made arrangements for llama owners Ed and Juanita Slocum of Hastings to bring the animals to school. Feeding carrots to the llamas was a big hit with the kids as well as the ice cream cones Adrounie brought for the children. The event was a celebration to conclude the volunteers' reading program for the school year. GFWC-Hastings Women's Club members take turns visiting the school to read to the children. Volunteers, in addition to Adrounie and Renner, included Connie Semerad, Martha Day, Jeanette Kogge, Emmalene McConnell, Nan Button, Donna Johnson, Juanita Slocum, Joyce Hargrove, Nettie Baughman, Kathy Clary, Rowena Hale and Lorene Wellman.
